In this blog, we will not be talking about ectodermal dysplacia. Rather, we will be following the process of the treatment of ectodermal dysplacia in a specific area- the teeth. Few dentists are willing to treat this disorder as it is a long, tedious and difficult process which requires a lot of skill, expertise and patience. This blog will is an extension of the story of a dentist who pitched in to help a patient diagnosed with ectodermal dysplacia.
Introduction to Ectodermal Dysplacia
Ectodermal Dysplacia is a group of conditions in which there is abnormal development of the skin, hair, nails, teeth, or sweat glands. Ectodermal Dysplacia is caused by gene defects.
What has it got to do with teeth? One of the symptoms of ectodermal dysplacia is abnormal or missing teeth. This can be so severe that patients are afraid to smile, as in the case of this patient, hence Dr. Chow Kai Foo's goal.
Treatment: Treatment should begin early in childhood. Children as young as two may resort to dentures, while later in life, dental implants can be used. It is very important to practice routine oral hygiene, this goes for everyone.
